Clinical study of 66 cases of non-penetrating abdominal injuries


Abstract
Various aspects of 66 consecutive cases of non-penetrating injury treated at Paik clinic are reviewed.
When classified by organs involved in each cases, rupture of small bowel was the commonest findings at operation, being observed in 27 cases (40.9%), followed by ruptured mesentery (13 cases, or 19.6%), spleen (9 cases or 13.6%) , kidney (8 cases or 12,1%) , liver, bladder (each 7 cases, 10, 6%) .
Etiologically, traffic accident accounted for 30 cases (45.4%) , and violent human contacts brought another 25 cases (87.8%) leaving only 11 cases which were due to other causes.
In most instances, they fell into initial stage of shock immediately following injury, but recovered from it unless internal hemorrhage is massive or sustained injury very extensive.
Subsequent course and treatment of these patients are discussed and importance of prompt, and adequate amount of transfusion is stressed.
Operative procedures employed, mortality and prognosis are described according to the organs involved, and are commented upon.
Literatures on the subjects are reviewed and quoted time to time.
